Premier League last man standing

Last man standing is the simplest football competition there is: pick one Premier League team a week, survive if they avoid defeat, and keep going until everyone else is gone. This is the full guide — the rules, the variations, the strategy, and the free tools that run the admin for you.

The rules in thirty seconds

  • Every gameweek you choose one Premier League club before the first kick-off.
  • If your club wins or draws, you survive into the next round.
  • If your club loses, you are knocked out.
  • Once a club has been used, you can never pick it again all season.
  • The last player left alive takes the prize — or the pot, if your league has a buy-in.

That last rule is what makes it hard. There are only twenty clubs, so a season is a budgeting exercise as much as a prediction game. Read the full walkthrough in how to play.

Last man standing, survivor pool, knockout — same game

In the UK it is usually called last man standing or a knockout sweepstake. In the US the same format is a survivor pool or eliminator, normally played on the NFL. South African and Australian pubs run it as a last team standing competition. The mechanic is identical; only the defeat rule tends to differ, because American football has few draws.

We use win-or-draw survival by default, which suits Premier League football: roughly a quarter of matches end level, so a draw rule keeps leagues alive long enough to be fun.

Rule variations worth knowing

  • Win only. Draws eliminate you. Brutal — most leagues finish before Christmas.
  • Rebuys. Knocked-out players can buy back in once, usually at a higher fee, up to a set gameweek.
  • Wildcards. Each player gets one free pass to reuse a club, or one survival token.
  • No pick = auto-elimination, or the alphabetically first unused club is assigned. Decide before week one.
  • Split pot. If everyone still alive is eliminated in the same round, the pot is shared between them.
  • Blank weeks. Postponed matches count as a survive, or roll your pick forward — pick a side and write it down.

The full rule sheet we enforce — deadlines, draws, postponements, missed picks and tie-breaks — is set out on the last man standing rules page. When you're ready, create a last man standing league and invite your players with one link.

How to pick each gameweek

You are not backing a winner, you are backing not a defeat. That changes everything: a solid mid-table side at home is often safer than a big club away. Three habits do most of the work.

  • Bank home fixtures. Home sides lose materially less often across a season.
  • Spend fragile clubs early while their fixtures are kind, and save two or three strong clubs for the ugly weeks.
  • Plan three gameweeks ahead, commit to one. Injuries and European midweeks rewrite everything.

Our who to pick page ranks every fixture for survival safety each week using form, home advantage and opponent fragility, and each club has a team guide with three seasons of defeat records. More depth in the strategy guide and fixture planning.

Running a league with friends, an office or a pub

The game is easy; the admin is what kills it. Chasing picks on WhatsApp, remembering who has used which club and collecting entry fees is what makes most leagues collapse by October. Set the rules in writing before the first deadline, collect the money up front, and let something else keep the pick history.

See office and pub leagues for entry fees, group sizes and keeping people engaged after they're knocked out.
