Injuries, suspensions and team news: what actually changes a pick

Updated September 2026

Survivor football is about avoiding defeat, not scoring goals — so the absences that matter are almost never the ones leading the headlines.

Defensive absences move the needle; attacking ones rarely do

A missing thirty-goal striker costs a club wins. A missing first-choice goalkeeper, centre-back pairing or holding midfielder costs it clean sheets, and clean sheets are what keep you alive. When you read team news, scan the back six first: keeper, both centre-backs, both full-backs and the deepest midfielder. Two or more out of that group is a genuine reason to look elsewhere.

Suspensions are more predictable than injuries

Yellow-card totals and red cards are public and certain — you know a week in advance that a defender is unavailable. Build the habit of checking whether a club's key defender or midfield anchor is one booking from a ban when you are planning to use that club soon.

Rotation is an absence too

A fit player who starts on the bench after a European night is the same problem as an injured one. Managers with thin squads rotate less; managers in three competitions rotate heavily. Combine the injury list with the midweek schedule rather than reading either alone — see the gameweek difficulty calendar for the weeks where this bites hardest.

Internationals and the weeks after a break

The round following an international break is the least predictable of the regular season. Players return late, some return injured, and preparation time is minimal. Favour settled sides with fewer internationals, and be sceptical of clubs whose spine has flown halfway around the world.

When to check

Press conferences land a day or two before the match, and confirmed line-ups an hour before kick-off — usually after your deadline. So lock in a sensible pick early, then revisit once the pre-match briefings are out and change it if the back line has been gutted. Our Premier League news feed carries the team news as it breaks, and the weekly rankings give you the form and fixture side of the same decision.
